CLEANING GROUT AND GROUT STAIN REMOVAL Cleaning
Grout has to be one of our most frequently requested areas for advice.
Questions like; “How do I get my grout clean” and “How
do I remove a grout stain” seem to crop up time and time again.
Well, hopefully with our help, the right products and a little bit
of effort, you will be able to approach cleaning grout and grout
stain removal with a great deal more confidence.
Most grouts are porous. So, when cleaning grout
it is important to remember that unless the grout has been sealed
with a good grout sealer
any dirt or grout stain is likely to have penetrated the pores of
the grout and not be confined to the surface. This means that a
quick wipe over the surface of the grout joint, regardless of how
strong your cleaning solution may be, is unlikely to be all that
successful. Instead a deep cleaning action is required.
For cleaning grout in small areas, or an isolated
grout stain in walls, floors or other surfaces such as windowsills,
try applying Grout Deep Clean.
The handy trigger spray makes it easy to apply Grout Deep Clean
directly to the affected area. The slightly viscous formulation
means that it will cling to vertical joints and it also enables
a longer dwell time (the solution does not evaporate immediately).
Leave it to dwell for about 10 minutes before scrubbing with a small,
stiff brush – then rinse. This unique product has a very good
deep cleaning and ‘grime-pulling’ action and can be
quite effective in helping to ‘whiten’ stained white
grout.
For cleaning grout in larger areas such as
entire floors we would recommend the use of an all over cleaner.
Heavy Duty Tile & Grout
Cleaner is a powerful degreaser and deep cleaning solution.
When applied to the floor, leave to dwell for 5 to 15 minutes depending
on the severity of the staining. Then agitate by scrubbing the joints
directly with a nylon or natural bristle scrubbing brush. Mop up
or wet vac the dirty solution and rinse well with clean water. The
important things here are dwell time and rinsing; Alkaline-cleaning
solutions need time to ‘work’. The longer you leave
the solution before scrubbing (without allowing it to dry out of
course) the more ‘wok’ it will do and the deep the clean
you will achieve. Once you have ‘pulled’ the dirt out
of the joint is will be suspended in the solution, so it is critical
that you remove this dirty solution (don’t allow it to dry
naturally) otherwise the dissolved dirt will just go straight back
into the joint along with detergent residue.
The addition of Aqua Mix Poultice
to the cleaning solution can often boost its cleaning power for
very difficult or deeply ingrained situations.
To remove lime scale and hard water deposits
from wall tiling, particularly shower areas, try the Shower Tiles
Plus. Finally, if you would like to etch the surface of the grout
to remove oxidization or yellowing, or as a pre treatment to colouring
the grout with Aqua Mix Grout Colorant then we would recommend a
dilute (1:3) solution of Phosphoric
Acid Cleaner or Pre-Treat
Cleaner (neat). Simply apply, leave to work for a few moments,
agitate and then rinse well with plenty of clean, fresh water.
