Dirty,
stained tile grout? Don’t like the colour anymore?
Chosen the wrong colour
to begin with?
Thinking of grout removal?
Well don’t – there is no need!
Now you can easily refresh the colour of your
grout or change it altogether with Aqua
Mix Grout Colorant without the hassle of raking out the existing
grout. As an added bonus you will also be sealing your grout with
the most effective grout sealer on the market.
The most common complaint about tiling
are grout stains.
What
can you do about grout stains?
Well you may be able to clean the grout (see
our article on grout cleaning) but what if it has gone beyond that?
The normal remedy is to rake out the grout and replace with new.
This is a painstaking, laborious task that often gives less than
satisfactory results. It can also result in serious damage to your
tiles and may lead to you having to completely retile.
The answer is Grout Colorant.
So
what is Grout Colorant?
Well first of all it is not paint, a dye or
pigment that is going to wash out of the grout. To get technical
for a moment, Aqua Mix Grout Colorant is a single-part, water-born,
high-grade epoxy coating.
What that means is this; a brush applied coating
that will bond to grout but not to glazed tiles. In fact it is very
easy to apply and washes off the tiles with just plain water. When
cured, the grout joint will be a consistent, uniform colour and
completely sealed against water born contaminants. This means that
will be much easier to keep clean, highly resistant to staining
and because of it’s impervious nature, it will be much more
difficult for mould and mildew to take hold. In short, the grout
will not just be ‘restored’ it will actually be better
than before.
Grout
Colorant:
- Can be used on walls and on floors as well
as on tiled work surfaces.
- Is suitable for interior and exterior situations
- Retains the texture of the existing grout
- Is great on all porous, cement based grout,
including latex or polymer-modified grouts
- Even works on existing epoxy grout •
Can last up to 15 years in domestic situations
- Is available in 24 stock colours
Grout
colorant can be used to:
- Re-colour old, grubby joints
- Change the colour of grout joints to refresh
the look of the tilling
- Correct colour inconsistency problems sometimes
associated with pre-coloured powdered grouts
- Provide an effective seal against grout
stains
Note:- Grout
Colorant can be used to go from a dark colour to a lighter one but
it may require 2 or more coats with adequate curing time between
coats. Grout Colorant is not recommended for situations subject
to constant immersion in water such as swimming pools.

How to Apply Aqua Mix
Grout Colorant
Applying grout colorant is easy just follow
the step-by-step guide.
Step
#1 – Preparation
For all cement-based, latex or polymer-modified grouts.
For best results it is important to prepare
the joints properly. The aim is to remove any surface contaminants
that may prevent the grout colorant from forming a good bond with
the grout.
The joint does not have to be absolutely spotlessly clean so you
are not too concerned about deep staining or discolouring.
To prepare the joints, apply Aqua Mix Pre Treat
Cleaner. Simply spray over the joints and allow it to ‘work’
for 1 to 2 minutes. Then scrub with a nylon or natural bristle scrubbing
brush, rinse with clean water. Dry with clean absorbent towels.
Allow minimum of 2 hours to dry before applying Grout Colorant
For Existing Epoxy Grout
Use Heavy Duty Tile and grout cleaner to thoroughly
clean the joints, rinse and dry them as above.
For really dirty or very old epoxy joints,
use Sealer and Adhesive Remover: Apply to joints with a brush or
sponge and leave to work for 10 to 20 minutes then scrub, rinse
and dry as above.
Step #2 – Application
- Shake the bottle
- Apply Grout Colorant directly to the joint
or into a small dish.
- Using a small nylon brush (Our Grout
Colorant Brushes are ideal) work the colorant well into the
joint
- Allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours
Step
#3 – Clean-Up
Cleaning up is easy as the Grout Colorant
does not bond to the glazed tile.
- Using a standard hand-held trigger-spray
bottle lightly mist the surface with water and let it stand for
a few moments
- Using a nylon scrub pad (such as
our White
Emulsifying Pads) remove excess grout colorant from the surface
